When a minor is accused of committing a crime, he or she will face legal proceedings in the juvenile court system rather than the adult criminal court system. Juvenile court is meant to be geared toward rehabilitation and treatment, rather than focusing solely on punishment. However, depending upon the circumstances of the offense, a minor may face trial as an adult and therefore the same penalties that an adult would in the same situation.
